Positions available: up to 65 We would like students to help us with creating content that is aligned with our vision, mission, and sector. We will ensure the student has a clear understanding of what these elements are for our organization. During the spring and summer, the Antarctic Institute of Canada runs a program called Sharpen the Quill. The goal of the project is to develop student's writing and publication skills. During March and April, students will be expected to write 4 articles for us. These can be blogs, newspaper, or peer-reviewed articles. We have places to publish the articles for free on peer-reviewed publications. Students will be expected to: Research topics Write articles for a specific journal Peer-review articles for other students Submit their articles for approval and revisions before publication

Audio Engineer & Narrator Phase 4: Natural Sciences

Positions available: 30 Upon completion of Phase 3 (Natural Sciences Audiobooks), Audio Engineers will embark on Phase 4; recording of audiobooks focused on Natural Sciences. Each student will be assigned a specific Natural Sciences audiobook to record. We have over 160 books in our catalogue. We would like students to help us with creating content that is aligned with our vision, mission, and sector. We will ensure the student has a clear understanding of what these elements are for our organization. Project Outcomes: Audio Engineers will finish narrating, recording, mixing, and editing two (2) Natural Sciences oriented audiobooks in phase 4 (80 hrs). Receipt of the Level UP honorarium is contingent upon full completion of this outcome in the allotted 80 hours. Project Details: With guidance from the program manager, assistant program managers, and creative directors, the Audiobook Narrator and Audio Engineer will work in small groups (1-2 people) to narrate and record Natural Sciences texts for the purpose of audio-book production. The Audiobook Narrator and Audio Engineer will possess the following attributes and qualifications: - Ability and desire to record one’s own voice using digital recording technologies. - Working understanding of recording including but not limited to: Digital audio workstations such as garage band, Protools, Reaper, Logic pro, or others), microphone placement, recording, editing, and enhancing recorded audio. - Self-starting workflow to meet rigorous deadlines. - Ability to create and maintain one’s own work schedule without direct supervision whilst ensuring a high degree of quality and integrity in the final product. - Access to one’s own recording equipment and recording space, including but not limited to; Microphones, XLR/USB cables, and an audio interface. - Applicants must own a computer capable of recording, storing, and processing large file sizes (minimum specs; 4GB RAM, 1.5 GHZ intel i5 processor or equivalent, at-least 30- 50 GB of free hard-drive or SSD space). - A captivating vocal presence - ability to portray engaging narratives through vocal flexibility and variation. The Audiobook Narrator and Audio Engineer will work closely with creative directors, program managers, graphic designers, authors, and editors to produce narrative works of high quality and integrity. Your main mentors are well experienced in the difficulties of navigating education and transitions. The founder, Dr. Austin Mardon, is a Member of the Order of Canada, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, in addition to dozens of other professional and scientific organizations. Dr. Catherine Mardon is a retired attorney from the United States, a recognized social justice advocate, and a bioethics expert. Both are approachable and hands-on, and former students continue to include them in their successes well after the end of their internships. KEY PROJECT ACTIVITIES/TÂCHES ASSOCIÉES AU PROJET: Writer of articles as part of a team. Research an important/timely topic for the writing project. Publish peer-reviewed articles in Academia Letters IDEAL ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES/RÔLES/RESPONSABILITÉS:* Channel a thirst for knowledge into a project of a lifetime. Get a jump on your peers by working as part of a collaborative team to take a topic, research your aspect of the topic, and produce a book-length manuscript for publication. Learn to edit your own work and the work of other members of your team. There are also opportunities to foster leadership abilities, conflict resolution, and remote work skills. FINAL PROJECT DELIVERABLES/LIVRABLES DU PROJET: At the end of the project, you will be a published author, showing your research and writing abilities, and your ability to see a large and important project through to completion.

The design of a board game, including the graphics for the game board and box, the player’s pieces, rules, and the game story. Producing an outline for game structures and outlines for rules and game mechanics. Coming up with color themes and media kits that match our marketing and communications guidelines. IDEAL ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES/RÔLES/RESPONSABILITÉS:* Please note appropriate projects can accommodate most students, regardless of the field of study or experience. CKUA Music Database Artist Tagging Project

Objective: Report statistics on airplay and provide announcers with more information and updated and accurate data about artists. Description: Using the artist by residence report in the music database, work through all the artists in the database alphabetically by the province they reside in. Make note of the start date and end date of each listed location, including the total number of hours to assist in mapping out approximately how much time will be needed for this project. Locations in plan may be separated as seems most appropriate for each province (ex. Alberta (Airdrie to Edgerton), Alberta (Edmonton/ Edmonton/Calgary) and Alberta (Esther to Wood Buffalo). In addition to tagging artists according to their indicated categories (will be provided), add any missing profile information and if applicable, update artist website to current active website. A students day to day could include: Researching artist biographies using a variety of internet resources, such as artist pages, social media, and other sources such as Discogs. Navigating the CKUA Music Database to find and update artist profile pages, adding appropriate artist tags, creating 'See Also' links to link relationships between collaborators, and updating the artist website links to the most current/updated ones available.
